Farmer’s son helps team bag bronze in int’l tourney

Ludhiana: Son of a local farmer, Vaninderjit Singh has made the city proud by being a part of the Indian baseball team in the 14th West Asia Baseball Championship that was recently concluded in Sri Lanka.
Vaninderjit helped the team grab a convincing win over his Irani counterparts in the league stage matches of the Asian championship. India bagged bronze medal in the tournament after facing defeat from Sri Lanka in the semi-final with the score of 2-1.
Apart from this, Vaninderjit has also performed well in all India inter-university championships, more than five times, and clinched several medals for the state university.

Harbir Singh Gill, member of Ludhiana baseball association, said “After a lot of hard work for the past several months, Vaninderjit gave one of his best performances in several tournaments, He qualified for the Indian baseball team for the Asian championship and helped the team win the bronze medal. Vaninderjit is a talented player with good skills in the sport which he honed by three to four hours of daily practice sessions in the school ground.”
Expressing happiness over his and team’s achievement at the Asian tournament, Vaninderjit said, “It was a proud moment for me when I scored the crucial point for my team. This helped us secure a win in the high scoring match against the Iran team in the qualifying stage of the tournament. I come from a poor farming family as with limited resources. It is for the first time that I have represented the national team in such a big tournament. I would also like to be a part of the next international tournament which falls in September. I have increased the practice time to five hours so that I perform even better. Baseball is increasing in popularity in India and a lot of budding players are coming forward in this game, but the sports ministry needs to do more development in this sector.”
