MC demolishes 2 illegal structures along highway

Ludhiana: Cracking down on structures violating the norms, civic officials on Tuesday conducted a demolition drive at Delhi Road and Sherpur chowk to Samrala chowk bypass road.
During the drive, the MC dismantled one building fully while one was partially demolished. Owners of two more buildings promised to demolish their illegal structures on their own.
Giving details of the action, assistant town planner Harvinder Singh said, “There were two showrooms, one shop and a liquor vend on the violaters’ list. We razed one structure completely and one was partially dismantled.”

He said two more structures will be demolished by the owners on their own and the latter have taken permission for the same from the civic body.
The move has come aftert a contempt of court petition was filed in the Punjab and Haryana high court against Ludhiana MC for not removing illegal structures. As per the Punjab Regional and Town Planning and Development (PUDA) Act, any commercial and residential accommodation (after 1995) should be constructed at a distance of 5 metres from the main roads and any structure violating these norms must be dismantled.
