FOXBORO – There was a time where Devin McCourty thought about going out on top. That meant retiring after the Patriots Super Bowl LIII win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Following his third championship, McCourty said he wanted to step away and see how he felt before committing to the 2019 season. Of course, that didn’t last long as the Patriots safety decided to play at least one more year at the end of February.

On Wednesday, McCourty wouldn’t comment on whether or not this will be his last season in the NFL.

“We’ll see. I’m just having fun,” McCourty said. “It’s been a really fun offseason starting in April being back here. Still being that veteran presence and being here. The fun hasn’t stopped, so I won’t stop, either.”

This season marks McCourty’s tenth in the NFL. He’s coming off another successful year with the Patriots. This week, he earned some recognition by being named in the NFL Network’s top 100 players of 2019. McCourty came in at 89 and it was the first time in his career he made the list.

At 31-years-old, McCourty admits he sometimes feels his age. However, there are days when he feels 10 years younger. That’s why he’s still playing.

“Sometimes I wake up and it feels like 10 years. Other times I wake up and feel like a rookie again,” McCourty said. “It goes fast though. I still remember my first training camp – being here and having to report and run the same day. So much anxiety, nervous about what will happen that first day of camp.

“Back then we had double sessions and Bill (Belichick)’s not very detailed in the schedule so you don’t know what to expect each day. I still remember that feeling and try to pass it on to the younger guys and tell them to keep coming back. That has a lot to do with it – just show up each day in training camp and allow yourself to go through whatever coach asks of us.”
