Tamil Nadu police arrest man for criticising NIA raids, arrests

TIRUVARUR: The Muthupettai police in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu on Monday arrested a 39-year-old man after he posted some messages on an instant messaging app criticising the recent raids and arrests of some people in the state by the National Investigative Agency (NIA).
The NIA has been conducting searches in the houses of some people associated with the Ansarulla terror group which had planned to set up Islamic rule in India by waging war against the Union government. The NIA arrested 14 people.
M Thaj alias Thajudheen, 39, of Mohammadia Street in Muthupettai in Tiruvaur posted a message criticising the actions of the NIA. His message said the NIA had been targeting Muslims as per the orders of the Union government. However, no one from jamad (group of Muslims) was available to question this, he wrote.

Based on a complaint lodged by Muthupettai village administrative officer Dineshkumar, the police registered a case against him under sections 153 (purposely giving provocation with an intent to cause a riot) and 153 (A) (promoting the enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc) of the IPC.
He was produced before a magistrate court in Thiruthuraipoondi on Monday evening. The court remanded him in judicial custody.
