The Sensex ended below 38,000 mark for the first time since May 17.
The S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 indexes extended declines to a fourth straight day led by declines in heavyweights HDFC, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Reliance Industries, Maruti Suzuki and ONGC, among others. However, the losses were capped as ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Infosys and Larsen & Toubro witnessed buying interest in today's session. For most part of the day, Sensex and Nifty traded in a narrow band and turned highly volatile in last hour of trade owing to heightened weakness in Nifty Bank index.
