LUCKNOW: As many as 424 infants and children were found abandoned in Uttar Pradesh between April 2017 and March 2019, chief minister
Yogi Adityanath informed the assembly on Monday.
Yogi said that the abandoned children were being taken care of by five state child care institutes (CCIs) and 13 non-government organisations. The centres are regulated under Adoption Regulations, 2017, envisaging adoption of children by childless couples. He was replying to a query of SP MLA Irfan Solanki who sought to know how many instances of infant killing and children being abandoned had been reported
in UP.
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has asked the government to set up more CCIs where abandoned children could be kept. As per an estimate, there are around 8,000 registered and unregistered CCIs. Kids in unregistered CCIs are more vulnerable to poor care, physical and sexual abuse, and trafficking, NCPCR had observed.
