Van Dijk: Winning Ballon d'Or would be a 'dream come true'

2019-07-23 10:03

Cape Town – Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk says that it would be a "dream come true"if he were to awarded the Ballon d’Or.

The 28-year-old had a stunning year with the Merseyside Reds as they pushed Manchester City to the final matchday of the 2018/19 season for the Premier League title which saw him being voted the PFA Players' Player of the Year for the season

City claimed bragging rights by a single log point as Liverpool’s nearly thirty-year journey for league crown continues.

But two weeks later, Van Dijk helped guide Liverpool to winning their sixth Champions League crown against Tottenham in the Madrid.

He then missed out on winning the inaugural Nations League silverware where Portugal beat the Netherlands in the final.

However, the defender is tipped as the favourite candidate to claim the famous Ballon d’Or award when it is announced in early January.

"If people are talking about it - you can't say it doesn't do you something," Van Dijk told Sky Sports News.

"But it's a subject we don't have any influence on. I can't change anything right now other than get fit, stay fit and that's the situation.

"Winning something like that is a dream come true for every footballer in the world. If you don't then you just get on with it and try to perform better than last year.

"It would be fantastic, and I would be very proud.

"But the main thing will be to focus on what we do all together and achieving the bigger goal - that's getting silverware with the club."
