12 child marriages took place last year, says Yogi Adityanath

LUCKNOW: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath also informed the House that 12 child marriages were reported from April 1 to October 2018 in the state.
Maximum three child marriages were reported from Firozabad, followed by two in Agra and one each in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Hardoi, Kasganj, Maharajganj, Mainpuri, Etah and Sant Kabirnagar.
SP MLA Irfan Solanki had enquired about child marriages in the state.

In 2001 census report, India stated that no girl below 10 years of age was married. Since 2001, child marriage rate in India has fallen, reaching nationwide average of 7% by 2009.
Child marriages were outlawed in 1929 in India. The Child Marriage Act has undergone several revisions since 1950. Since 1978, the minimum legal age for marriage has been 18 for women and 21 for men.
