'Please check your lint filters': Urgent fire hazard warning after family's dryer EXPLODES and bursts into flames

A Canberra fire station has issued a warning to residents to check lint filters in dryers after a local family's appliance suddenly burst into flames.

The dryer was running on Sunday when it suddenly caught alight, with the family sitting in the nearby lounge room in Murrumbateman in Canberra's north-west.

The family managed to remove the burning appliance from the laundry and drag it outside, where they put out the flames using a garden hose.

The fire was caused due to excessive amounts of lint in the filter.

The fire brigade weren't required on the scene, but the incident sparked a stern warning from the Murrumbateman Rural Fire Brigade.

'A terrifying event for a local family tonight. Please check lint filters,' the station posted.

'And NEVER LEAVE YOUR DRYER ON OVERNIGHT.'
