Recharge well comes as a relief for residents from water logging

Ludhiana: The recently constructed rain water recharging well in C block of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar has come as a welcome relief for residents who were earlier plagued by deep water logging especially after a heavy shower. Residents say even though now it takes some time for the water to drain from the road but the duration for which stagnant water used to trouble the residents has definitely come down. The residents claimed if earlier water logging was for 2-3 hours now it has reduced to half an hour or one hour depending on the duration of the rain.
While giving the information about the system the superintending engineer of operation and maintenance cell, Ravinder Garg said, “This 30 feet storage capacity rain water recharging well has been constructed at the cost of Rs 25 lakh. A separate pipeline has been laid down from road towards grit chamber constructed in the vacant land. From this grit chamber the water reaches screening chamber and then finally in the recharge well. The rain water that brings along sand and other type of impurities along gets treated first of all in two chambers and then reaches ground after filtration process.” Regarding its being a success model he said they have installed the first such system in the city and whether it can be replicated anywhere will be seen after the success this monsoon season.

A resident of the area Ashwani Sharma said, “We were really troubled with water logging at the road outside our flats in every rainy season but in the previous rainfalls during this year it was relief.” He said water remains stagnant for lesser time on the road and is drained after a few minutes. Another resident of area Baljit Singh said, “I would say there was 40 percent relief from the water logging to the area residents because first of all system is not fully complete and moreover after initial rainfalls sand has surfaced in the well.” He said the system will bring desired relief only when there will be regular maintenance of this well. To avoid any untoward incidents the civic officials have locked the gate of vacant land where wells are constructed because these are uncovered and anybody can fell inside.
A recharge well was proposed earlier in 2010. Along with this, some more sites were selected including Leisure Valley, D-zone office of MC, Sita Nagar Park, BRS Nagar Park I-block, Sarabha Nagar Park-I block, Gurdev Nagar near Grewal Hospital, Basant Vihar,Model Town near Deep Hospital, Guru Nanakpura park, Namdev Colony near A block, and main Chowk of Haibowal near Labour shed. But none of them took shape.
