Saleen Unveils New Crossover And Electric City Car In China

The Saleen brand was launched in China over the weekend with a little help from Jason Statham and pop star Chris Wu.

While that’s not too unusual, the nearly hour and a half long event saw the unveiling of a new electric vehicle and a crossover. However, the big news was the announcement that the S7 was going back into limited production.

Greg Kable tweeted the electric city car is called the Maimai and will feature a 107 hp (80 kW / 109 PS) electric motor. That isn’t much, but the model will reportedly have a range of up to 190 miles (305 km/h).

As you can see from our screen shots taken from the launch video, the Maimai isn’t much of a looker as it features slab sided styling and plastic body cladding. The coupe also appears to be a two-seater with a compact interior and a small trunk. The company also showed a sportier variant featuring a revised front fascia and a comically large rear spoiler.

Next up is the crossover which is reportedly called the MAC. It features a slender grille that is flanked by LED headlights. The model has also been equipped with a sporty front bumper, plastic body cladding and a rakish windscreen. Other highlights include a sloping roof and a dynamic greenhouse.

The crossover is slated to go into production next year and it will be powered by an internal combustion engine that develops 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. Little else is known about the model, but it presumably has all-wheel drive.

Last but not least, the company announced a limited run of S7 Le Mans. They have a Ford-sourced 7.0-liter V8 engine that has been equipped with two turbochargers. This enables the model to produce 1500 hp (1119 kW / 1521 PS) and 1328 lb-ft (1800 Nm) of torque. In terms of performance, the car will reportedly accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 2.2 seconds and have a top speed of 298 mph (480 km/h).

Jalopnik reached out to Saleen for more details and was told the S7 Le Mans have already been built. Despite being owned by China’s Jiangsu Secco Automobile Technology Corporation, the new S7s were made in California.
