PUNE: The Faraskhana police arrested four youths for collecting “toll” on the newly constructed Chhatrapati Shahu bridge in Shivajinagar on Sunday.
Police said the suspects — Arfaz Sayyed (18), Aftab Hasan Shaikh (20) and Faizan Peerzade (25) of Kasba Peth, and Vikrant Tilekar (32) of Shivajinagar — would target private buses late at night. “The suspects would position themselves at Kumbhar Ves chowk on the Kasba Peth end of the bridge,” sub-inspector Yashpal Suryawanshi said.
In the early hours of Thursday, the suspects waylaid a private bus, being driven by Annasaheb Sawant to Shivajinagar from Maldhakka chowk. The suspects told him to pay Rs200 for using the bridge. “The bridge, constructed by
Pune Municipal Corporation, is free for public use,” Suryawanshi said.
When Sawant said the bridge was open to the public, and told the suspects to issue a receipt, they slapped, abused and snatched Rs200, and let him go.
Sawant lodged an FIR on Saturday. Police scanned CCTV footage of the bridge and ascertained the suspects’ identity. “During questioning, they admitted to collecting toll from three other private bus drivers,” Suryawanshi said.
