Thiruvananthapuram: The University College had a peaceful reopening after ten days of shutdown on Monday morning. The students were admitted into the campus only after producing their identity cards before the police and teachers of the college at the entrance.
The new principal of the college, Dr C C Babu, also took charge on Monday. Till date, there was no full time principal for the college. The collegiate education department had appointed the new principal following the incidents that occurred on July 12 at the campus.
The college council has decided to continue the police security for the college for a few more days. As per the directive from the collegiate education directorate, new policies have been introduced in the campus, which the students and political outfits have to follow.
Meanwhile, KSU set up its unit in the college after 18 years. The names of the unit members were announced by KSU state president K M Abhijith at the satyagraha pandal, where he along with other KSU activists were observing an indefinite fast, which ended on Monday. C Amal Chandran, a third year BA student, is the new unit president of KSU in the college. Apart from him, Arya (vice president), Achuth S (secretary), Aiswarya Joseph (joint secretary), Amal (treasurer), Gopan P M and Ishan M (executive members) are the other officer bearers.
AISF state president J Arun Babu inaugurated AISF unit at the college on Monday. Ajesh and Renin Santhosh have been elected as president and secretary of the unit. AISF unit handed over a set of suggestions for smooth functioning of the college to the principal
SFI also showed its strength on the first day of the reopening by organising a march inside the campus to observe the commemoration of Rajani S Anand, who committed suicide in 2004 as she was unable to pay fees for an engineering course.
