PANCHKULA: Two cops have abused their position to stalk a woman for her mobile phone number in a new low for the police department.

Although both assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) Joginder and Ramesh posted at the Sector 20 police station have been suspended, the case has highlighted the brazen misuse of power by the law enforcers that could never have come out in the open had the woman stayed silent.
On July 19, the woman lodged a complaint to assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Noopur Bishnoi alleging the two had been pursuing her for her phone number. The breaking point came when the two landed up at her house with a false claim.
The woman alleged the two cops told her that her car was involved in one of the accident cases reported at the Sector 20 police station and they needed her mobile number to ascertain whether she was present at the site or not through her mobile location at that time. The woman said she told them that she was not involved in any accident, but they insisted on her number. Doubting their intentions, the woman refused to share her number and moved a complaint.
ACP Bishnoi brought the matter to the notice of deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Kamaldeep Goyal, who initiated an inquiry.

The probe indicted the two cops, finding the allegations of the woman correct. The report was submitted to the DCP.
DCP Goyal said, “It emerged no accident was reported at the Sector 20 police station for which both the ASIs went to the woman. Their intention was to take her mobile number and they had stalked her in the past too as per her complaint.” “Based on the inquiry report after looking into at all the angles, I have ordered the suspension of the ASIs for stalking the woman and marked a departmental inquiry against them. Further investigation in the case is under progress,” he said.
