VARANASI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath visited Ubbha village in Sonbhadra district on Sunday, met family members of the massacre victims and said that all land mafia members would be booked under the National Security Act (NSA), including those involved in the July 17 bloodbath. Ten Gond tribals had been shot dead over a land dispute last Wednesday.
He also enhanced the compensation — from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 18.5 lakh for the kin of the dead and Rs 2.5 lakh for the injured — and announced a time-bound inquiry into the massacre. The families of the 10 victims would also be given a house each under a government scheme. The government had earlier announced Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for injured.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, meanwhile, took a dig at Yogi Adityanath after he visited Sonbhadra. “I welcome UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s visit to Sonbhadra. Standing with the affected people is the duty of the government. Acknowledging one’s duty is good,” Priyanka tweeted a day after she had met relatives of the Sonbhadra massacre victims.
In Ubbha village, Yogi said a three-member committee headed by the district revenue board chief would conduct an extensive survey of land in the district and verify documents, especially in respect of tribals. Yogi said, “The Ubbha massacre has shown how the land mafia grabbed land in nexus with some political parties. The main accused of the July 17 massacre, the village head Yagya Dutt, is a Samajwadi Party leader, he misused his political influence to grab land in Ubbha and other places in the district.”

Targeting the opposition, Yogi said, “This is a big political conspiracy. Its foundation was laid in 1955 when the land was transferred to a trust set up by a Congress leader. In 1989, the Congress government in UP transferred the land to the trust’s members.”
Yogi also visited the district hospital and met the injured. He handed over cheques to the kin of two of the deceased.
