Advocating the need for regional language to be the official language at High Courts, retired Supreme Court Judge Justice V. Gopala Gowda said that it would benefit litigants
Speaking at the fourth State Law Seminar, organised by the Lawyers Association of Madurai District Court (LAMDC) here on Saturday, Justice Gopala Gowda said that suitable amendments should be made to include regional language as the official court language.
Narrating his experience, he said though he was in Delhi as a Supreme Court Judge, he was not well-versed in Hindi. Not every one would have a sound knowledge of English or Hindi.
On electoral reforms, he said that the present scenario of vote-for-cash had resulted in criminalisation of politics.Electoral reforms had to be made so that stern action could be taken against those indulging in such activities. He lamented the fact that people were not coming out in large numbers to vote and register a higher polling percentage. When the legislature and the executive failed, the judiciary must step in, he added.
In his inaugural address, Madras High Court Judge Justice T. Raja spoke on the need for electoral reforms and the importance of the regional language in court.
Retired Madras High Court Judge S. Vimala stressed the need for a speedy justice delivery system. Senior counsels shared their views on topics that were divided into three sessions: Election law reforms; administration of justice in regional language; and speedy justice delivery.
LAMDC president advocate M. Subramanian welcomed the gathering and secretary Bodi S. Ilango proposed the vote of thanks. Treasurer A. Ali Siddiq was present.
