Rs 56.38 lakh gold seized at Dabolim airport

Vasco: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs apprehended three Tajikistan nationals at the Dabolim international airport, on Sunday, for possessing 1.787 kg of assorted gold jewellery, worth Rs 56.38 lakh, which was concealed in inner wears, and hand baggage.

According to sources, based on intelligence inputs, the air customs officers of Goa headed by deputy commissioner of customs Dr Raghavendra P, apprehended the three female international passengers, who arrived from Dushanbe Tajikistan via Dubai by Air India flight Al 994.

“The personal search and baggage search resulted in the recovery of 1.787 kg of assorted gold jewelry which was concealed in inner wears, and hand baggage,” disclosed the sources, and added the value of the recovered assorted gold jewellery in the international market is Rs 56.38 lakhs.

The jewellery was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act 1962. The whole operation was conducted under the overall guidance of commissioner of customs Goa R Manohar. Further investigation is in progress.

Meanwhile, Goa Air Customs has seized gold worth Rs 1.05 crore at the airport during this financial year since April 2019.
