PUNE: Two persons jumped over the compound wall of ‘Leela Garden’, a gated
housing society in the
Kalyaninagar area, around 2.21am on Thursday and took the stairs for striking at four locked flats before decamping with cash and silver utensils, collectively worth Rs 26,100, from the two.
The burglary came to light around 6.15am on Thursday after one of the residents saw the gates of the flats open. The chairman of the society, Shiv Shankar Kalive (61), has lodged a complaint with the Yerawada police in this regard.
Senior inspector Rajendra Kadam of the Yerawada police said, “The two
burglars jumped over the compound wall of the housing society from the joggers’ park side around 2.21am on Thursday. They then broke the locks of a flat on the fourth floor of A-wing and stole Rs 1,100 and five silver glasses, collectively worth Rs 21,100. The thieves then broke the lock of a flat on the sixth floor of B-wing and stole Rs 5,000.”
The officer said the thieves also tried to burgle two more flats on the fourth and sixth floor of B-wing. “If they managed to steal anything from these two flats will be clear once their residents, who are out of the city, will return and record their statements,” he said.
Police investigations have revealed that the thieves used staircase for targeting the four flats. “Three security guards were on duty but none of them was alert. Their questioning has revealed that no foot patrolling was being conducted by them in the society,” the officer said.
Kadam said a CCTV camera installed on the society premises has captured images of the two suspects. “Our team is working on certain clues for establishing their identities. We hope to detect the case at the earliest,” he added.
Society chairman Kalive said the society was well-equipped with security measures. “The suspects looked like professional criminals. They knew about the locked flats and we suspect that they had prior information about their owners being away,” he said, reasserting that the society had robust locking arrangements to guard flats against robberies and burglaries.
Police have booked the suspects under sections 457 (burglary in night) and 380 (theft) of the
Indian Penal Code.
Late in the night on Friday, additional commissioner of police (crime) Ashok Morale told TOI, “Officials from the crime branch (unit IV) have managed to detain one of the suspects from Vishrantwadi and his questioning is under way. We suspect he may have also stolen gold ornaments worth over Rs 3 lakh from a flat at Jagdishnagar in Aundh recently.
Meet with copsThe Kalyaninagar Residents’ Association has called a meeting with police officers for improving security and intensifying patrolling in the area. The meeting would be held at the Joggers’ Park in the society on Saturday.
