Immigration officials at Kempegowda International Airport nabbed a 25-year-old man from Bangladesh who was allegedly trying to fly to Dubai in the UAE with a valid Indian passport.

When caught on Tuesday, the accused, Sureshar, told officials that he had crossed the border 17 years ago after paying ₹6,000 to security personnel. He had lived in Kolkata in West Bengal for several years. He moved to Bengaluru in 2015 where he found employment in a hotel at Majestic.

According to the police, he also worked as an AC technician for some time before he got a passport from Kolkata through a tout named Joy S., who charged him ₹50,000.

“He has used this passport to visit his family in Bangladesh, and return to India. Though he was heading to the United Arab Emirates on a tourist visa, he was planning to get a job and settle down there,” said the police.

He has booked under various sections of the Passports Act, and remanded in judicial custody.
