GURUGRAM: The
traffic police have decided to make changes to their plan to make
Shankar Chowk safer for
pedestrians and cyclists and experiment with it this weekend, when traffic is relatively lower.
The new plan promises to rectify the shortcomings that were noticed when the pedestrian traffic system was first tested this Monday. Shankar Chowk has been notorious for a number of fatal accidents involving pedestrians, which necessitated the new plan.
Sources privy to the road safety action plan said the traffic police were contemplating a trial run on Saturday. “Roads have been designed in a way that benefits only motorists, but puts the lives of pedestrians and cyclists at risk. Moreover, several people cross Shankar Chowk on foot and run the risk of meeting with an accident. In our road safety plan, we are identifying, planning and designing traffic mobility in a way that benefits all,” said Gurpreet Singh, senior road safety associate at Haryana Vision Zero.
Singh said Monday’s trial run was to gauge the efficacy of the plan. He, however, pointed out that the team had chosen a wrong day to experiment with the plan as the traffic flow was high on Monday. So, barricades and cones kept on the road as part of the plan had to lifted within 15 minutes “Perhaps, testing with the plan on a Monday was the major challenge. We are now planning to experiment with it over the weekend. This will give us enough time to gauge its feasibility,” a traffic cop said.
Singh said after the plan was successfully tested, the traffic police will create awareness among commuters so that there is no confusion.
