Directs that a meeting be held in the next two days to prevent horse-trading

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday set aside a notice for no-confidence proceedings against the Mayor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation [Salt Lake] which was scheduled on Thursday.

Fresh notice

Justice Samapti Chattopadhyay directed that a fresh notice for no-confidence motion against Mayor Sabyasachi Dutta be issued within the next two days. The court observed that in order to prevent horse-trading, the meeting will have to be held within two days.

A notice was issued to Mr. Dutta on July 9 by the BMC Commissioner. The BMC is one of the biggest civic bodies after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and is run by West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress. Mr. Dutta has allegedly defied the TMC on a number of occasions and the party wants him removed from the post.

The no-confidence notice was challenged by Mr. Dutta on the grounds that it was not issued properly by the BMC chairperson. The Calcutta High Court has ordered that the notice be brought by the chairperson of the civic body.

Meanwhile, the issue of no-confidence motion of the Bongaon Municipality, where violence had erupted on Tuesday, was also raised before the court.

Justice Chattopadhyay blamed the head of the civic body and observed that the police did not act to prevent the disturbance. Trinamool Congress MP and advocate Kalyan Banerjee raised questions over other irregularities before the judge which led to an argument in the court. The court observed that it has been doing its work honestly and without any fear or favour.
