Madurai Corporation officials seized 1,500 kg of banned plastic carry bags from a godown at a lorry booking office on North Masi Street and imposed a fine of ₹25,000 on a lorry driver on Thursday.
According to the sanitary officer of Zone 4, the carry bags were bought from a private manufacturer in Dindigul and were transported to Madurai in a lorry. Residents of the area alerted the Corporation officials, who took swift action, the sanitary officer said.
The Corporation has deployed 20 teams, led by four health officials and comprising 20 health inspectors, 35 cleanliness inspectors and 100 sanitary workers, to inspect all the 100 wards in the city.
Since the introduction of plastic ban, the Corporation has seized 14,500 kg of banned plastic products and imposed a total fine of ₹18.50 lakh.
Corporation Commissioner S. Visakan asked city residents to register a complaint with the official concerned if they notice use of plastic bags.
Residents of Zone 1 could lodge their complaints with N. Vijayakumar (mobile phone number 9788810135), Zone 2 residents could complain to P. Rajkannan (9788810132), those living in Zone 3 could complain to Veeran (9442033164) and those in Zone 4 could complain to V. Sivasubramaniam (9788810118), he said.
