FALL RIVER — The fun is in the journey when it comes to women helping other women do something good for themselves.
Twice each week, the Starting Line Ladies hit the track at Somerset Berkley Regional High School. Some walk. Some run. Some train for their next marathon.
“We help women make themselves a priority,” said Tascha Gaspar, a clinical running coach and group founder.
The goal is to use running to help women “refocus” and be the “best woman, best mom” they can be and find their “true self,” Gaspar said.
Gaspar launched the Starting Line Ladies last year as a reboot of an earlier Somerset running group. The latter group was organized in 2015 when Gaspar – a mom of two – moved back to Somerset with her husband after living in Boston for a decade.
“I always knew I wanted to move back,” Gaspar said.
Last year, Gaspar also started a personalized coaching and nutrition support service to help women train for distance running after members asked for the service.
“I left my career to start a women’s company,” Gaspar said. “I help them get to the starting line and finish races.”
A former mental health clinician, Gaspar decided there were other ways to help.
“I wanted to bring positive changes to people’s lives,” Gaspar said.
Running, she said, is “therapeutic.”
Gaspar said running relieves stress, offers mental and physical transformation and boosts self-confidence.
Another plus: “It’s just a beautiful way to get into a conversation,” Gaspar said.
The business, also named Starting Line Ladies, has brought Gaspar back to her first love of running.
As a former Somerset High School student, Gaspar started training in track and cross country when she was 14. Since then, she’s run five marathons and lots of half-marathons. She is currently at the tail end of a 100-day running challenge.
At the weekly running group, Gaspar has re-connected with some old classmates and made new friends.
“It’s wonderful,” Gaspar said. “It’s empowering as a business owner, and it fills my heart as a friend. It feels really amazing to inspire people.”
Gaspar said the running group meets each Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Thursday at 8 p.m. through the fall at the Somerset Berkley Regional High School track. The cost to join is $50.
“Some only walk,” Gaspar said. “Others have done distance races. It’s not competitive.”
Women may bring their spouses and children (they're welcome to play on the infield) to eliminate any barriers to fitness.
