Nagpur: In what was initially suspected as a double suicide, later turned out to be murder after a couple was found unconscious in an open space in Koradi on Tuesday. Dilip Khapekar, 45 and his wife Anita were found unconscious with a bottle of poison at the spot.
After the preliminary investigation, cops had suspected it to be a suicide case but later it came to the fore that the woman’s throat had been slit.
Anita succumbed to her injuries at Mayo Hospital while Dilip is undergoing treatment. The murder came to light when one of the eye witnesses came forward and informed the police that he saw the man allegedly slitting his wife’s throat before consuming poison.
According to the police, Dilip and Anita had been married for several years and have two children. Since the last couple of months Dilip, who works at a shop, was living away from his wife and children.
Cops said that Dilip used to suspect Anita’s character and may have taken the extreme step to punish her. On Tuesday evening, an eye witness spotted Dilip slitting his wife’s throat. However, the eye witness initially did not inform the police about the murder, but later, he contacted the control room.
Koradi police rushed to the spot and took the duo to Mayo Hospital where Anita was declared brought dead. Koradi police had registered a case of accidental death.
However, after the eye witness came forward and told Koradi police about the incident, a case of murder was registered under sections 302 and 309 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Senior PI of Koradi police station Ashok Pardhi said, “The accused is currently undergoing treatment. We will take appropriate action after he is discharged from the hospital. We have registered an offence of murder after the eyewitness came forward. We have also seized the knife and the poison bottle from the spot.”
