1,200kg of banned plastic bags seized in Madurai

MADURAI: Madurai Corporation officials on Thursday seized 1,200kg of banned plastic bags, which were brought here from neighbouring Dindigul district.
The plastic bags were seized while being unloaded from a truck parked in North Masi Street here. Madurai Corporation commissioner S Visakan visited the spot and conducted an inquiry.

Officials said the seizure was made after a phone call from a passerby was received by sanitary officer Sivasubramanian in the morning. Officials said they had recently publicised the phone number of officials to be contacted to inform about use of banned plastic products.
So far 14.5 tonne of banned plastic materials have been seized here after the ban came into force in Tamil Nadu on January 1. Corporation officials collected a total of Rs 18.5 lakh as fine.
