The Interventional Radiology department at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology has successfully treated Aortic Dissection (a tear in the large blood vessel branching off the heart), using a rare minimally invasive procedure, an official release issued here said.
The patient, a 57-year-old native of Tamil Nadu, had been admitted to the hospital following chest pain.
On examination, it was found that there was a tear in the aorta, which had resulted in decreased blood flow to the brain and arms.
Using stents
The procedure, Fenestrated endovascular aortic repair, allows surgeons to repair damages to aorta without resorting to an open surgery. It involves positioning of stents with fenestrations or holes, in the blood vessels.
The procedure, relatively new, is done on patients with aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection, who cannot undergo complex and extensive open surgery .
The procedure was led by medical teams of the Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery and Anaesthesia departments of the SCTIMST.
