Man crushed by garbage truck on iconic coffee strip

A man is fighting for life in hospital after he was run over by a garbage truck in Melbourne's CBD early Wednesday morning.

Police believe the man was asleep on Degraves Street when he was hit by the truck at about 5.15am.

The iconic coffee strip off Flinders Lane has been closed to traffic as police and emergency services attend the scene.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said he was taken to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.

The male driver of the garbage truck stopped at the scene to help and is now assisting police.

In Sydney in May, a garbage truck driver was cleared by a court of negligent driving causing death, after he ran over an emaciated homeless man sleeping in a laneway, mistaking him for a pile of blankets.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
