MOHALI: All such checkpost set up by the police to stop and check vehicles have been withdrawn with immediate effect.
The action came after additional director general of police (ADGP), (traffic) S S
Chauhan issued a communication directing the SSP
Mohali including other SSP's of different districts to stop only those vehicles with visible traffic violations.
The order read, 'Many precious lives are lost on our roads which are preventable. The mandate of the traffic police is to regulate traffic and take remedial measures to reduce deaths on our roads. It has been observed that many traffic police constables are seen conducting stop and search operations of vehicles which has nothing to do with their duties.'
SSP Harchana Singh Bhullar said, "We have already passed the instructions to the staff not to set up any such check post which is not directed by any of the DSP level or above officer. If found in violation, they will have to face action."
Police is directed not to conduct stop and search operations unless orders of the same are issued by the SSP or COP's as part of resource mobilization for law and order.
The traffic police constables should be directed to maintain and regulate the flow of traffic in their areas. This would also apply to the highway patrol vehicles.
Bhullar added that last week, two cops were suspended for setting up a check post at
night hours at Kharar highway without informing their superiors and not having any order to set up such checkpost.
