The driver of a $400,000 BMW has been spotted reading a book while travelling on a busy motorway.

'It was not just a glance. This guy was swerving about the goddamn road having a grand time with his book.'

The man, believed to be driving a BMW 7-Series worth up to $400,000, had a book resting against the steering wheel with his eyes on the pages as he drove.

Some online commenters were furious with what they said was dangerous driving, but others made light of the situation.

The person who snapped the image said they weren't able to write down his licence number before he drove off.

'We certainly beeped at him enough for him to realise other people were not going to cop the risks of his actions,' they said.

Although reading a book while driving is may not be a common as using a phone, some people said they had seen this type of behaviour before.

The Australian Road Rules state drivers must have 'control of the vehicle' and must have 'a clear view of the road ahead'.

Drivers can face heavy fines or charges in an accident if these conditions are not meet.

Commenters joked the man was perhaps 'reading the road rules', while others said it was a common sight on the roads
