Kottayam: An ASI from Pala police station was suspended for assaulting a man taken into custody allegedly for drunken driving.
The action against ASI Joby George is based on a preliminary inquiry report by special branch deputy SP N Parthasarathy Pillai. The officer said that the report was filed after watching the CCTV visuals in the police station. The report was submitted to Kottayam SP P S Sabu who issued the suspension orders by evening.
Akhil Bose (32), reportedly a cancer patient, was allegedly beaten by the ASI at the station and was later admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here in the early hours of Tuesday. According to Anoop, the brother of the victim, Akhil had returned after a medical check-up at the Regional Cancer Centre only two weeks ago. According to the police, Akhil was booked for drunken driving while Akhil had told the police that he had only consumed medicines for cancer and had insisted on a medical test.
Meanwhile, Anoop told TOI that Akhil was discharged from MCH by Wednesday afternoon. He also said that the doctors told him to bring his brother directly to the MCH if he develops any health issues later. “I will be filing a formal complaint to the chief minister, DGP and the SP on Thursday,” he said. tnn
