CHENNAI: Actor and
MNM president
Kamal Haasan has extended his support to actor
Suriya who criticised some proposals in the draft of the Centre’s
new education policy.
Kamal condemned the ruling party at the Centre for criticising Suriya.
Addressing students on behalf of his Agaram Foundation on July 13, Suriya said, “It is not good to burden kids by imposing the three-language formula on them at a very young age. The government’s role should be to first ensure equal education to all.”
Suriya hit out at the state and the Centre for shutting down ‘single teacher’ schools. “Where will those children in such villages go to study? Now they are pushing this new education policy. It concerns the future of 30 crore children of the country. If people remained silent, the government will go ahead and implement it,” Suriya said.
BJP leaders Tamilisai Soundararajan and H Raja criticised Suriya’s statement.
On Tuesday, calling Suriya “my beloved little brother,” Kamal tweeted that he extended his full support to him. He also attached a statement, hailing Suriya and his family for supporting students hailing from poor and middle class families.
“I agree with many of the points Suriya raises regarding the draft education policy. MNM strongly condemns the autocratic attitude of the Centre and state government for criticising Suriya for airing his view on the education policy that was published to seek the public opinion,” he said in the statement.
Tamilisai criticised Kamal for extending his support to Suriya. She said, “In the name of freedom of speech, many are expressing and propagating wrong information without having full knowledge about government policies.”
Meanwhile, director Pa Ranjith also extended his support to Suriya.
