A palatial hotel in India, which has suites fit for maharajahs at £5,245 a night, has been rated the best in the world.
Readers of Travel + Leisure gave The Leela Palace Udaipur 98.89 out of 100 in the publication's annual 'World's Best 100 Hotels' awards, which earned it the top spot.
The 72-room, eight-suite Rajasthan hotel was lauded for its 'breathtaking view of Lake Pichola', 'excellent facilities', and its emphasis on good service. One fan said the spot would be 'ideal for honeymoons or special celebrations' because of its romantic atmosphere.
In second place was The Lodge & Spa at Brush Creek Ranch in Wyoming - with an overall score of 98.67.
For wildlife fanatics third prize winner Singita Sabi Sand in South Africa might appeal. It has three rustic-styled luxury lodges set within a sprawling privately owned game reserve.

1. The Leela Palace Udaipur, India

Readers of Travel + Leisure gave The Leela Palace Udaipur in India 98.89 out of 100. The 72-room, eight-suite Rajasthan hotel was lauded for its 'breathtaking view of Lake Pichola', 'excellent facilities', and its emphasis on good service

Each guest room spans 580 square feet with the £5,245 a night Maharaja Suite (bedroom pictured above), covering an impressive 3,552 square feet. The luxury hotel is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year

In second place was The Lodge & Spa at Brush Creek Ranch in Wyoming - with an overall score of 98.67. The hotel is surrounded by prairies, mountains, creeks and rivers

3. Singita Sabi Sand, Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa

For wildlife fanatics third prize winner Singita Sabi Sand in South Africa might appeal. It has three rustic-styled luxury lodges set within a sprawling privately owned game reserve. It scored 98.59 in the poll

4. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

The Farm at Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand was ranked fourth, with a 98.57 score

There are various experiences on offer at the hotel, which is a working sheep farm, including a course on shepherding, heli fishing and a guided walk along the rugged coastline
5. Gibb's Farm, Karatu, Tanzania

Gibb's Farm in Karatu, Tanzania, was placed fifth thanks to a score of 98.56. It was established as a coffee farm in the late 1920s and was later refurbished as a rustic luxury inn

There is a main farmhouse and 17 cottages on the property, featuring local artworks and natural materials
6. JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa, Vietnam

Coming in at number six with a 98.56 rating was JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa in Vietnam. What was once a late 19th-century French university has been reimagined as an 'eclectically themed, ultra-luxury beachfront playground' by renowned resort architect Bill Bensley

7. The Mulia, Bali, Indonesia

The Mulia in Bali, Indonesia, sailed in at seventh place with a 98.25 score. The resort overlooks the dramatic coastline of Nusa Dua

There are a total of 111 beachfront suites at The Mulia, nine restaurants and bars, a spa and fitness centre
8. Singita Grumeti, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

There are lodges, a private retreat and a luxury tented camp at Singita Grumeti, which came eighth in the ranking with a 98.12 score

9. (tie) The Bushcamp Company's Mfuwe Lodge, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

The Bushcamp Company's Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia tied at ninth place with a 97.87 score. The hotel complex is perfect for animal lovers with giraffe, hippos, buffalo, antelope, and crocodile regularly spotted in the area. In November the local elephants regularly wander right through the lobby, lured by a nearby wild mango tree

Mfuwe Lodge has 18 air-conditioned chalets arranged around the banks of two lagoons. Guests can relax on an open deck or take a dip in the swimming pool
9. (tie) Lapa Rios Lodge, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Also coming in at number nine was Lapa Rios Lodge in Costa Rica. The eco-lodge helps to preserve more than 1,000 acres of primary and secondary rainforest, and assists in the development of the local community

The rainforest hotel opened in 1993 and there are 17 bungalow-style lodges on the property with stunning panoramic views
9. (tie) Rosewood Beijing

Another hotel in at ninth, with a 97.87 score, was the Rosewood Beijing. Above, a view of the hotel's swimming pool at night, which has a glass ceiling that allows swimmers to look up at the starlit sky

The Beijing hotel boasts 283 rooms, six restaurants, a state-of-the-art spa, indoor swimming pool, gym and yoga studio. The hotel also offers landscaped outdoor space, with multiple terraces, gardens and balconies
10. (tie) Turtle Island, Fiji

In joint 10th place in the Travel + Leisure poll was Turtle Island in Fiji with a 97.78 score. The 500-acre private island is home to 12 secluded beaches

There are 14 light-filled villas on Turtle Island, each one made from local materials, so they blend into their surroundings
10. (tie) Royal Mansour, Marrakesh, Morocco

The Royal Mansour in Marrakesh, Morocco, tied at 10th place. Above, an exterior view of the grand property, which is tucked away in the heart of the bustling city
