PANAJI: After a delay of several days, the Congress party finally picked Margao MLA and former chief minister Digambar Kamat as the opposition leader in the assembly and chief of the legislature party.
State Congress president Girish Chodankar said that Kamat’s name was cleared by the party high-command in Delhi.
“We congratulate Digamber Kamat and wish him success in the services of the people and the party,” said Chodankar.
The Congress suffered a jolt last week when 10 of its MLAs, including the then leader of the opposition (LoP) Chandrakant Kavlekar, rebelled and joined the BJP.
Due to the delay, Congress had no leader in the 40-member state legislative assembly for the first three days of the monsoon session.

Chodankar has assured Kamat of his co-operation and support. Chodankar also expressed confidence that Kamat’s long political experience would take the Congress to “greater heights in the state by taking people’s issues and exposing the corruption and anti-Goa decisions” of the BJP government.
The Congress, which emerged as the single-largest party after the 2017 Assembly elections, now has just five MLAs.
