CHENNAI: A child lifter slipped away with a three-year-old boy when his parents were asleep at Chennai
Central railway station on Sunday night. Police tracked the
kidnapper using CCTV cameras and found him leaving the Tambaram railway station with the toddler around 12.45am on Monday.
The child’s parents, natives of Odisha, realised that he was missing only after they woke up at 2am. They searched the station premises before lodging a formal complaint at the Chennai central railway police station.
The boy’s name was Somnath, son of Ram Singh and Neelavathi of Nabarangpur district in Odisha, who worked as labourers at the upcoming police quarters in Purasawalkam, said an investigation officer. Couple looked for work at a few other construction sites and reached Chennai Central around 7pm, to sleep the night off before meeting contractors on Monday. They kept their belongings beside them and fell asleep in the waiting hall along with Somnath, the officer said.
Railway police conducted inquiries. They skimmed through the CCTV camera footage recorded at the station and found a man carrying the child. He was seen boarding the last train to Tambaram from Park railway station.
Of the two videos shared by railway police, one shows the child dressed in red walking around in Chennai Central, while the alleged kidnapper wearing a light blue shirt and a cap following him, and checking if someone came looking for the boy. In the second video, the same man is seen entering Park railway station using the metro rail subway carrying the child.
When contacted, railway police said CCTV footage from the Tambaram railway station showed the same man leave the station with the child. “A special team has been formed to nab the kidnapper and rescue the child from him. It is not clear which side of Tambaram station the man came out of. We are questioning autorickshaw drivers outside the station for possible clues,” said an officer.
