During the Wonderful Indonesia Travel Fair 2019 at The Mall, Dr Sujatmiko mentioned that the data showed a decrease in the number of Indonesian visitors to Brunei year-on-year and more was needed to be done in order to improve the trend.
He said that there was a drop in Bruneians visiting Indonesia in 23018 as compared to last year. As per the Indonesia’s statistical bureau more than 17, 279 Bruneians visited Indonesia in 2018 as compared to the previous year with 23,455 Bruneian visitors.
Air transportation contributed 58.3 per cent, followed by land with 41 per cent and water at 0.7 per cent.
Bandar Seri Begawan has direct flights through Royal Brunei Airlines to three cities in Indonesia – Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali.
Jakarta is a shopping and culinary destination also acts as a transit for the surrounding areas that includes Bandung, Puncak Bogor, etc – and other cities like Padang, Jogja, Solo, Malang and others.
According to Dr Sujatmiko the top five Indonesian destinations that draws more tourist dollars from the Brunei market are Bali, Aceh, West Sumatra, Jakarta and Yogyakarta.
New destinations like Derawan in East Kalimantan will also provide a good opportunity for Bruneians to open new markets.
Both Brunei and Indonesia shares strong ties in a wide spectrum of cooperation that includes trade and investment, tourism, agriculture, marine and fisheries, health defense, education, youth etc .
