Tirupur: A 42-year-old woman, her father and brother committed suicide near Mangalam here on Monday as the family was upset over the suicide of the woman’s son.
Police identified the deceased as Selvi, her father R Durairaj, 70, and her brother Gopalakrishnan, 39. Selvi was separated from her husband Siva Kumar and had been living with her father. Selvi and her brother, who also lived with them, worked as tailors in a knitwear unit.
“Selvi’s son Raghunathan, 22, was brought up by his grandfather and uncle. Last September, he committed suicide. The family did not completely recover after the incident. Neighbours said they often used to talk about ending their lives,” a police officer said.
On Monday, Gopalakrishnan visited his younger sister Shanthi, who lives with her husband, at Iduvai. “He handed over a document of a house and Rs 30,000 to Shanthi,” the officer said.

After Gopalakrishnan returned home, the trio tried to commit suicide by hanging, the officer said. “On Monday evening, when neighbours saw their house was locked for a long time, they checked inside and found the trio hanging from the ceiling. Durairaj and Gopalakrishnan died on the spot. Selvi, who was fighting for her life, was rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. She died without responding to the treatment,” the officer said.
The Mangalam police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
