As soon as he realised his home was shaking, Nisar Shaikh, a third-floor resident of Dongri's Kesarbai building, rushed outside. While he managed to save his three-month-old daughter and a year-old son on his way out, he couldn't help his father and 25-year-old wife. Abdul Sattar and Sadhiya were later confirmed dead among 10 people.
"They had two houses on the same floor. While my cousin Nisar was in one house with the children at the time, his wife and parents were in the other, at the back," said Sana Shaikh, a relative. "The children are at a relative's house for the time being. They suffered minor injuries. Who will look after them now?"
Sana added that Abdul Sattar, 50, was a social worker who had helped a lot of people in the community.
Nisar's injured mother is among the eight injured people admitted to JJ Hospital.
Among the other deceased are Muzamil Salmani (15), Javed Ismail (34), Arhan Shehjad (40), Kashyap Ameerajan (13), Zuber Salmani (20) and Saira Shaikh (25).
Just like the Shaikh family, Salmani family also lost many members. Naveed Salmani, admitted at JJ Hospital with injuries, was worried about his year-old son Ibrahim, his wife Sana (25) and his cousins Zuber (20) and Muzamil (15).
While Muzamil's was one of the first bodies to be pulled put, those of Ibrahim, Sana and Zuber were retrieved later. They were all declared dead at the hospital.
Zuber and his younger brother Muzamil had arrived in Mumbai from New Delhi on Monday night and were staying at cousin Naveed's second-floor apartment in the building. "A month ago, Zuber and Muzamil lost their mother to cancer. They were visiting us to get a change from the routine," said Salman, Naveed's brother. "I had left for work in the morning and was lucky not to get trapped in the building," he added.
Naveed, who works at a salon and has sustained injuries on his hands, said, "My family was at home when it happened. My mother was with me when we were running downstairs."
TP Lahane, the Director of Medical Education Research at JJ Hospital, said, "All the injured patients are in stable condition. Their injuries are minor."
Some patients were shifted to nearby private hospitals in Dongri. These include three-year-old Abdul Rehman Shaikh, who was discharged, and four-year-old Nasra Mohsin Salmani, who is getting treatment.
