Tourism operators worldwide are reducing plastic use

With this month being Plastic Free July, we turn the spotlight on couple of organizations which are taking steps to safeguard the environment.

In recent years, the Thai islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao have introduced bans on smoking and dumping garbage on beaches, feeding marine life, waste water dumping, anchoring or fishing on coral reefs, walking on the seabed, and seaside construction. In the meantime, visitors are stopped from bringing plastic bags to another island, Koh Samet.

Six Senses is all set to make its resorts plastic-free by 2022, and has declared other marine conservation initiatives as well. It has promised to launch sunscreen that is coral-reef safe at all its properties by September 2019; oxybenzone and a related chemical extensively used in skin care products, like sunscreen, cause common damage to corals, according to research by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Having opened up to tourists lately, Myanmar’s southern Mergui Archipelago brags the type of undamaged, postcard-perfect beaches that are rare avis to find. The tourism businesses operating in the islands are playing their part in ensuring the area remains untainted by visitors.
