However, till the time such expectations turn into reality, the tourism sector continues to suffer. After the April disaster, tourism went down significantly in May and June, and many small businesses are now forced to lay off staff or have them work for minimal pay. The island was aiming to draw at least 3 million foreign tourists this year; but now, it is hoping to get around 2 million of them.
The government of Sri Lanka expects a deficit of $800-900 million in tourism revenue this year. The government, has hence, introduced a series of measures to boost tourism that include lowering airport charges, reducing tax on jet fuel and urging hotels to offer discounts.
