White eggs versus brown eggs

For being rich in essential vitamins, minerals and macronutrient (protein), eggs are considered a complete food. Eggs make for one of the healthiest breakfast foods consumed worldwide. The main reason behind the popularity of eggs is that they are versatile – can be used in baked foods, added to curries, noodles, salads and froth. Many health experts even recommend consuming eggs every day for weight management and overall good health.
Talking about eggs, there are two types of commonly available eggs – white and brown. With the two types available, there is always a debate about which is healthier?

Let’s find out.

The common perception is that brown eggs are better for health as compared to white eggs. The perception has mainly been formed because brown eggs are sold at a higher price. But does the higher price justifies the nutritional value of these eggs?

The belief that brown eggs are healthier is certainly not true. Several studies have been done to find out the nutritional difference between white and brown eggs. But so far, no major difference has been found apart from the colour of the shell.

Here are some major features of white and brown eggs and the difference between them:

Taste
There is a very slight difference between the taste of both white and brown eggs.

Nutrition
In terms of cholesterol, protein and calories, both the eggs have the same profile. Though brown eggs are richer in omega 3, the difference is negligible. 100 grams portion of an egg has around 13 grams of protein, which is same in both white and brown eggs.

Price
Brown eggs are slightly expensive than brown eggs. But again, this does not have anything to do with the nutrition composition. People believe that brown eggs are more organic and hence are loaded with nutrients, but this is subjective and depends upon where you are sourcing eggs from.

Verdict
Depending on the quality and diet of the chickens, the quality of both the types of eggs can vary. So, whichever egg you choose to have, continue having it, as switching won't provide you with an upgrade.
