GAYA: Following the death of three-year-old Sanjiv (3) of Gaya town, the
death toll in suspected AES cases at Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH) surged to 13. Sanjiv breathed his last on Monday evening.
All the victims hailed from different parts of Magadh division. ANMMCH is the only tertiary health care centre in the region having a population of about of around 1 crore. As per statistics available, altogether 46 patients suffering from AES were admitted to the hospital over the last few weeks. However, no confirmation of
Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has been made till date.
ANMMCH sources said that out of the 46 patients admitted to hospital, five left against medical advice. The whereabouts of the patients, who deserted the hospital without proper reference or discharge, are not known.
“Apart from the 13 deaths and five cases of hospital desertion, 10 patients have been discharged after treatment. Some of these patients need follow up like physiotherapy and counselling as their limbs have significantly weakened due to the impact of the disease. As on Tuesday, 18 AES patients were undergoing treatment in the paediatric ward of the ANMMCH,” said a senior official wishing anonymity.
Neither ANMMCH superintendent Vijay Krishna Prasad nor Gaya civil surgeon Rajindra Prasad were available for comments as both the functionaries excused themselves saying that they were busy in a meeting.
