FALL RIVER — The motorcyclist who crashed into the overgrown median of I-195 near the Westport line Monday afternoon was identified Tuesday as a 33-year-old New Bedford man, according to state police.

The motorcyclist was driving a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle westbound on I-195 when he crashed into the median just before 4 p.m., according to a state police spokesman.

The New Bedford man was seriously injured and taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment, according to the State Police.

Emergency workers initially had trouble finding the motorcyclist because the median was overgrown and heavily wooded, State Trooper James DeAngelis said shortly after the accident.

The motorcyclist managed to call 911 with his cell phone and attempted to describe his location, telling dispatchers that he could see the sign for exit 8B, according to police radio broadcasts.

First responders located the motorcyclist over a half-hour after the crash, according to police radio broadcasts. The crash scuttled traffic on the interstate.

According to the state police spokesman, the operator of the motorcycle will be summonsed to court for motor vehicle offenses in connection with the crash. The Fall River police and fire departments as well as Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
