Mario Andretti’s Lamborghini Countach Is A $500k Piece Of Automotive Royalty

There are some racing drivers out there who drive rather ordinary cars on the street. We’re happy to report that Mario Andretti is not one of them.

The hugely successful driver, with an F1 world championship, Indy 500, and Le Mans 24 Hour victories under his belt, has a huge passion for performance road cars, especially Lamborghinis. Now of them, a 1984 Countach, is up for sale courtesy of Motor Car Gallery.

Andretti’s Countach is the 5000 S model, meaning it is powered by a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 pumping out 371 HP that’s fed by carburetors (fuel injection came a bit later). Lamborghini only ever built 321 examples of the Countach 5000 S and the listing states that Andretti’s is in top condition and recently underwent a comprehensive engine overhaul to make it as good as new.

The Italian supercar is painted red and stands out thanks to pinstripes with Mario Andretti’s logo. The black wing mirrors also featured the driver’s logo, while the interior is bathed in tan leather and complements the eye-catching exterior perfectly. Mileage sits at 17,715 km (11,007 miles) and the car has an asking price of $499,000, which is roughly in line with other 5000 S models currently on the market.

While we imagine Andretti will be sad to have parted ways with his beloved Countach, he does have a host of other Lamborghinis to enjoy, among which a 1989 Countach Anniversary, a 1991 Diablo, a Murcielago and an Aventador. They should be more than enough to comfort him, don’t you think?
