State to file SPL before SC on Mhadei award

Panaji: The government will be filing special leave petition (civil) before the Supreme Court against the findings of the award of Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal (MWDT) dated Aug 14, 2018.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant came out with this information in the state legislative assembly by way of a written reply on Monday.

The Mahadayi (Mhadei) Water Disputes Tribunal has allotted 5.4 TMC of water to Karnataka, out of which 3.9 TMC of water has been  proposed for diversion outside basin for drinking water purpose subject to certain condition, while 1.50 TMC of water has been proposed for in-basin use and 8.02 for non-consumptive use for in-basin hydro-electric power. 

“So far no environment impact study has been carried out and the same will be done by the project proponent, that is Karnataka, during the approval of the each project from the competent authority as per the award,” the written reply stated.

Karnataka and Maharashtra have both filed their respective SLPs (civil) in the Supreme Court in December, 2018, for reviewing the decision of the MWDT.

The matter is scheduled on July 20, as per the advance list.
