A man has been banned from owning pets for five years after he threw a dog against a wall so hard he blinded the pet in one eye because he was 'irritated'.

New Zealand man Alexander McGregor faced Tauranga District Court on Monday over the abuse which occurred in November 2018.

McGregor was at home with his girlfriend caring for her mother's dog Rafa, a Maltese cross, when he became irritated with the pet.

He picked Rafa up and threw him into a bedroom wall like a rugby ball.

Rafa suffered horrific injuries as a result of McGregor's abuse, becoming blind in his left eye.

When McGregor's girlfriend noticed the injury she took the dog to an after-hours vet who examined Rafa and found he had a prolapsed eye, swelling in his eyelids and bleeding.

The vet found Rafa had been blinded in one eye, and the pet cried out in pain when he was examined.

An investigator from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) questioned McGregor who admitted to his abuse and tried to justify it, complaining the dog 'annoyed' him and it had 'preventing him from relaxing'.

'In one moment, Rafa was blinded in one eye by the very person who was meant to be caring for him,' SPCA chief executive Andrea Midge said.

'The pain he suffered was extreme, as his eye increased in pressure.'

'There is absolutely no excuse for violence against animals, and the life-long consequences for this dog were completely avoidable, unnecessary, and cruel.'

McGregor was ordered to pay the SPCA $2000, as well as $824.70 to Rafa's owner and $130 to cover court costs.
