Thiruvananthapuram: The decomposed body of the
MTech student, who went missing last Monday, was recovered from the acacia forest located at a remote corner of Kerala
University campus, Kariavattom on Monday.
It was security guards of the campus, who were doing rounds noticed the rotten stench and found the body by Monday evening. The student, identified as Shyan Padmanabhan (27) of Vadakara, Kozhikode has been residing at Pangapara near Sreekaryam with his sister and brother-in-law for the past two years. He was pursuing his second year in MTech (signal processing) at College of Engineering, Trivandrum. A suicide note, recovered from the backpack which was found near his body, said that he was committing suicide as he couldn’t cope with depression. The body was taken to Medical College Hospital later in the evening.
According to police, Shyan had left home on July 8 on the context of visiting the library and never returned. The family members alerted Kazhakootam Cyber City police after the calls to Shyan’s phones were not answered. As Shyan’s phone was on, police tracked the location around Kariavattom – Thrippadapuram area and CCTV visuals recovered from the campus showed Shyan entering the campus and proceeding towards Hymavathi Pond on last Monday evening.
None of the cameras showed him leaving the campus, which prompted the police to launch a search throughout the campus but the sniffer dog that searched for Shyan stopped following the trail at Hymavati pond. Fire force scuba divers also conducted a search in the pond which only has shoulder depth water to no avail.
According to Kazhakkoottam ACP R Anilkumar, preliminary signs on the body suggest the case to be a suicide of tablet overdose.
Shyan’s brother-in-law Ajish confirmed that the handwriting in the suicide note matched with Shyan’s and said that he did not mention about any depression he faced with the family.
Abhishek Krishna, who was Shyan’s senior at CET, also said that Shyan never showed any signs of depression at the campus.
