Swachhata Abhiyan of Ramakrishna Mission cleans up Nellikai road, Mission street
MANGALURU: The 32nd shramadan of Ramakrishna Mission Swachhata abhiyan’s 5th phase was carried out in Mission Street and Nellikai Road on Sunday. Reshma Mallya, General Manager, Campco Ltd and Yogish Prabhu, assistant manager, Corporation Bank flagged off the shramadan. Mentor of the abhiyan Ganesh Karnik, Subhash Pai, chief general manager, MRPL, Subraya Nayak, Umanath Kotekar and others were present.
Reshma Mallya said, “It is puzzling to note that despite giving importance to cleanliness in rich Indian culture and heritage in the past, we are not able to keep our immediate surroundings clean. Though most of us keep our households clean, we do not care about keeping our surroundings and public places clean. It is welcome sign that because of such concerted abhiyans such as this, awareness (about cleanliness) is slowly coming.”
After flagging off, Swami Ekagamyananda, convener divided volunteers into four teams. First team led by Madhuchandra Adyanthaya cleaned Mission Street and cleared a black spot there by removing heaps of stinking garbage. Second team led by Sandeep Kodikal and Yogish Kayarthadka cleaned Nellikai Road and using earth excavator removed heaps of garbage from a corner in the road. The spot was levelled using crushed stone powder.
Third team of volunteers under Aniruddh Nayak and Avinash Anchan cleaned a black spot at the junction of Mission Street and Nellikai Road by removing garbage and building debris. Fourth team of students of Sharada Vidyalaya led by Saritha Shetty, Shreeja Srikanth and Vidhatri, after Shramadan, visited houses and shops and urged them to keep the area clean and distributed awareness handbills. Other volunteers cleaned nearby areas.
Volunteers who cleared three black spots on Nellikai Road and Mission Street, kept decorative flower pots and beautified the spot. As every week, they will keep watch over the spot constantly to prevent public from littering in the same spot. Jagan Kodikal, Sudhir Vamanjur and team of Swachhata Yodhas have been preventing public from littering in public places by identifying the persons and changing their attitudes by counselling.
Under the ‘Use dustbins and keep your city clean’ campaign that the Mission had initiated last month, shramadan volunteers distributed plastic dustbin to small street vendors and shops to be used and they were asked to urge their customers to use these bins. Till date about 300 such dustbins have been distributed at places such as State Bank, Baikampady, Hampankatta, Bokkapatna, Kulashekara, Nandigudda, Urwa Stores and Ashok Nagar.
