Bihar flood: Bagmati, Lakhandei wreak havoc

A diverson on main road, connecting Muzaffarpur to Darbhanga was washed away by Bagmati flood water
SITAMARHI: Torrential rain in catchment areas of Nepal aggravated flood situation in Sitamarhi district on Sunday, directly or indirectly affecting over five lakh people in 12 blocks.

The Bagmati, Lalbakeya, Adhwara, Lakhandei, Rato, Jhim, Marar and Hardi rivers have inundated at least 60 villages in the district. The Bagmati overtopped its eastern embankment near Jamla-Parsa villages, flooding at least 30 villages in Suppi block on Saturday night.
Floodwaters of the Bagmati and the Lakhandei are posing threat to Sitamarhi town as well. People of the town have started leaving their homes in search of safer places. Sitamarhi DM Dr Ranjeet Kumar Singh, however, said the rivers showed marginal receding trend on Sunday. The water level in the Bagmati reduced by 50cm on Sunday but it was still flowing above the danger mark.
