MUMBAI/THANE: Five people, including two teenagers, drowned in four separate incidents over the weekend.
In the first incident, two 14-year-old boys from Kopri village drowned in Thane creek after they ventured into the waters on Saturday afternoon. Their bodies washed ashore 24 hours later at Mithbunder, on Sunday. Locals who found the bodies informed the Thane municipal disaster management cell. The Thane police said the teenagers had left home around 4.45pm on Saturday saying they were going to play, but instead went to the creek. "The two boys might have failed to gauge the depth of the water and drowned," said Santosh Kadam, chief of the regional disaster management cell at Thane.
In the second incident, the body of a 43-year-old Borivli resident, Santosh Sandim, who was missing since Saturday, was found floating in a river in the Daulat Nagar area behind a school on Sunday. The Kasturba Marg police said they are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the cause of death. Sandim was unwell, his family had told the police when they filed a missing person's complaint on Saturday.
On Sunday, around 5pm, a 23-year-old garage mechanic from Kandivli (E) drowned off Aksa beach in Malad when he went there for an outing with two of his friends. The deceased was identified as Babu David, an orphan who was unmarried. The Malwani police said that firemen and lifeguards found David's body nearly two hours later.

In the fourth incident, a 26-year-old woman from Bhiwandi drowned, while her relative was rescued from Arnala beach in Virar on Sunday. A family of 12, including children, had gone to the beach for picnic. In the evening, when some of them got into the sea, Heena and Afreen Ansari (24) were pulled in by the tide. On hearing their screams for help, locals rushed to their aid and pulled them out of the water. While Heena was dead, Afreen was rushed to Sanjeevani Hospital.
The police have registered accidental death cases in all four incidents.
