Eleven people including three women and as many children were killed when a speeding truck hit an overcrowded auto rickshaw and a motor cycle while trying to overtake them on a single lane road in Gujarat’s Kutch district.
The victims were daily wagers from Madhya Pradesh, who had come here for livelihood. They were returning to Bhuj after a temple visit.
“Five men, three women and three children died and six were injured,” said local Inspector YB Rana.
“The driver of the truck fled,” he said.
The police seized the truck belonging to a local transport company.
The auto rickshaw was a modified vehicle known in local parlance as ‘chakda’. Widely used for public transportation in the Kutch and the Saurashtra regions, the tri-motorcycle-like vehicle can carry more than a dozen people.
